Truth or Opinion?

“Maybe what our world is starving for isn’t another opinion, but truth. Maybe what we need is to see the world around us for what it really is. Maybe truth can do more than inform us, but transform us.”

Gospel Realities: How the Kingdom of God Shapes Reality

Every morning when you wake up you are confronted with information. I argued with God over what I believe He was leading me to do in the writing of Gospel Realities and the creation of Bridgeway Ministries. I did not want to be just another source of information for people. To be perfectly honest I am sick of information, and I know that I am not the only one. The good news is that really is a good place to be. That is a great indicator that you were not made just for information, but for truth.

Why the distinction? The truth is we get fed up with information or opinions because it does not connect with who God created us to be. What we really want is to stop being so informed, but instead be transformed. What our sickness indicates is that we are looking not for facts, but for Jesus. Jesus said himself, “…I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6) Jesus is our truth. Any real truth that we encounter is finding out who Jesus is. Jesus is saying he is the very embodiment of truth. Once we get that, we get to God.

The incredible thing about truth is because it is Jesus, that when we grasp it, it automatically does the work of liberating us from the false philosophies, damaging emotions, and pessimistic outlooks we adopt from replacing truth with just information. Jesus also said that when you know the truth, it will set you free. (John 8:32) Truth has a way of shaking us free of everything that is a lie, and we can find the freedom we were created for. So next time when you turn on the news, read the newspaper, or check the Facebook news network (sarcasm), remember what you are looking for, because what you see you will become. So for anyone who has ever argued with God, you know that you will always lose. What I didn’t realize at the time I was arguing with God was that I was doing so because I was setting the bar too low. You and I were not created to just share information, but transformation, and that is only found in sharing Jesus.
